RED Directive 2014/53/UE

The RED Directive 2014/53/UE (Radio Equipment Directive), which replaced the R&TTE Directive, has been applicable since 13 June 2016 to regulate radio apparatus with a view to applying the CE mark. Radio devices in conformity with the essential requirements of this Directive can be marketed freely within the European Union.

Field of application

The RED Directive  2014/53/EU has been applicable since 13 June 2016 and obligatory since 13 June 2017. It substituted the R&TTE Directive (which is no longer applicable).

One of the most significant changes introduced by the RED Directive is certainly the change in the field of application (domestic, commercial, medical, industrial, means of transport), which includes and excludes specific types of product compared to the previous R&TTE:

Devices INCLUDED in the RED Directive 2014/53/UE

  • Audio and TV Apparatus, only receivers
  • Equipment that operates below 9 kHz
  • Radio-localisation devices

Devices EXCLUDED from the RED Directive 2014/53/UE

  • Made-to-measure evaluation kits for professionals destined to be used exclusively in research and development structures
  • Telecommunications terminals that are not equipped with a radio module (these fall under the field of application of the EMC and LVD)

ECO Certificazioni offers conformity assessment activities for radio products and telecommunications apparatus pursuant to the RED Directive, through a vast range of tests: from tests on electric safety and human exposure to electromagnetic fields, to electromagnetic compatibility tests (EMC) and verification of the radio spectrum.
