ISO 45001 – Occupational Safety Management System

The new ISO 45001:2018 Occupational health and safety management systems is a standard that applies to organizations, regardless of their location, size or type of activity. This ISO standard, published on 12 March 2018, is the first of its kind to certify management systems for health and safety in the workplace.

Structured to supplement the BS OHSAS 18001 standard, the ISO standard is also based on the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) methodology and has the same structure as ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015; this similarity makes integration with the Quality and Environmental Management Systems easier.

The ISO 45001 standard focuses on identifying all internal and external aspects that can influence the individual organization’s approach to health and safety management in the workplace.

The main points include:

  • The importance of leadership so that health and safety are taken into greater consideration and are integrated with other aspects of management instead of being delegated;
  • Paying greater attention to and exercising more control over all elements connected to the organization: equipment, contractors, builders, suppliers, manufacturers, etc.;
  • Promoting internal and external communication linked to health and safety issues;
  • The necessity of taking the reports, needs and aspirations of workers in the entire production chain into account to a greater extent;
  • Risk analysis as a fundamental aspect of business management.
